The Earth Observation Unit: a key partner

The Earth Observation Unit at Magellium Artal Group is specialised in optical space missions and the development of geophysical, environmental and climate applications based on the analysis of satellite data.

For 26 years, it has developed renowned expertise covering the entire Earth Observation value chain: image quality, sensor calibration, modelling and algorithm development, prototyping, data processing and exploitation, as well as the design and implementation of scientific software and high value-added operational services.

This end-to-end expertise enables the unit to operate effectively at every stage of a space mission, from requirements definition through to the production and exploitation of geophysical products.

Magellium Artal Group is an engineering and services group with nearly 300 engineers and PhDs, recognized for its scientific expertise as well as its capabilities in software and systems engineering, image processing, and geospatial data. For 26 years, we have been offering high-value-added solutions, mastering image data processing technologies, and developing and maintaining complex software tailored to our clients’ needs. Our commitment to innovation has shaped our reputation among major national, European, and international players.

Science for Earth care

The unit’s activities are strongly focused on understanding and monitoring the environment and climate change, drawing on scientific and technical expertise developed at every stage of the processing chain.

The unit actively contributes to the European Copernicus Programme, a cornerstone of Earth observation in Europe. In this context, it coordinates a European consortium for the implementation of an operational service for the production and distribution of high-resolution snow and ice data on a pan-European scale, operated on behalf of the European Environment Agency.

The unit is also heavily involved in innovative space missions, notably through ESA’s FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer) mission. In this context, it leads the FLEX DISC project as consortium leader, responsible for the development and operation of the ground segment dedicated to vegetation fluorescence data. This major project aims to provide advanced scientific products for monitoring photosynthesis and vegetation health on a global scale.

Furthermore, the unit supports the National Centre for Space Studies on key topics such as image quality, optical measurement and atmospheric sounding.

It also builds close partnerships with European research laboratories, helping to turn scientific breakthroughs into cutting-edge operational products and services.

Our approach

The unit is backed by a multidisciplinary team comprising scientists, engineers and PhD students, bringing together cutting-edge expertise in signal processing, measurement physics, modelling and software development.
This structure enables us to tackle complex challenges by combining scientific rigour, technological expertise and the ability to scale up solutions.

Our mission

To provide Earth observation and space sector stakeholders with reliable technological and scientific solutions enabling them to design, deploy and operate systems that address environmental and climate challenges.

Our vision

Faire des données spatiales une ressource utile pour notre planète.
